The topic/theme is light, and all its incarnations.

Day 20

WoWScrnShot_122213_003729

In that land where a princess sits under lock and key,
Pining behind massive walls.
There gardens surround a palace all of glass;
There Firebirds sing by night
And peck at golden fruit;

Hope’s fire grows when the flames come together.”

For some reason, this little shrine in amongst the farmlands struck a cord with me. Whilst I was flying around trying to make friends with everyone on the farm, I would often stop by and whisper a prayer or two of my own.

Thank you Matty for suggesting this because focusing on things light and airy in these long dark days has helped, not only to spark my imagination but to lift my emotions too.

Day 18
WoWScrnShot_121813_214826

Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow! But, as it sinks into the ground, I hear a whisper going through the leaves. “This, in commemoration of the law of love and kindness, mercy and compassion. This, in remembrance of Me!”

From the Charles Dickens short story A Christmas Tree

Day 19

WoWScrnShot_121913_215508

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
You are the tree most loved!
How often you give us delight
In brightly shining Christmas light!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
You are the tree most loved!

One translation of O ‘Tannenbaum

Day 13

WoWScrnShot_121713_205926

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Christina Rosetti

Day 14WoWScrnShot_121213_172404

It will not go out of my mind that if we pass this post and lantern, either we shall find strange adventures or else some great changes of our fortunes.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Day 15WoWScrnShot_121413_235659

I was grounded
while you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
you cut through lies
I saw the rain-dirty valley
you saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
you saw the whole of the moon!

The Waterboys, “The Whole of the Moon”.

This song is forever associated in my mind with the only occasion in my teenage years when my Father lost his temper with me. We were in Malta visiting family and I was roughly 14 or 15, determined to have fun and not be shackled to my Mother. Somewhere on the backstreets of Valletta I met a boy named Tamlyn and driven by a love of fairy stories promptly fell into his arms. We were in a darkened alley, him singing along to this song, playing on a stereo drifting down from an open window, when they found us. My Father has cold blue eyes at the best times and on this particular night, they were enough to make my “hero” take a step back, let go of my arm and then scurry off to let me “face the music” alone.

Day 16WoWScrnShot_121513_225511

THE wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

Alfred Noyes

(Ok, ok, it’s a wall not a road but…….)

Day 17

WoWScrnShot_030213_185707

My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends –
It gives a lovely light.

Day 10
firelight

The fire roared up in the grate and the candlewicks caught flame. The portraits blinked in weary surprise as a cold draft blew in. Shadows stirred, sliding across the walls, all for a closer look at the visitor.

Day 11

candlelight
They are the last romantics, these candles:
Upside-down hearts of light tipping wax fingers,
And the fingers, taken in by their own haloes,
Grown milky, almost clear, like the bodies of saints.

Sylvia Plath

Gilneas pulls on my imagination more than most areas, I find myself drawn like a ghost to wander it’s empty moors and deserted towns. Perhaps not surprisingly, it’s the graveyard with it’s monuments and crimson roses, petals bleeding across the stones where I spend most of my time.

Day 12
sealight

In sea-cold Lyonesse,
When the Sabbath eve shafts down
On the roofs, walls, belfries
Of the foundered town,
The Nereids pluck their lyres
Where the green translucency beats,
And with motionless eyes at gaze
Make ministrely in the streets.

Walter de la Mare

ravens
The ravens were ribbons of shadow, circling her head. Touch one and it melted into nothingness. Yet even now, with the harbingers of darkness embracing her, she could feel the light within, ready to flood out and drown the world in it’s blinding brightness.

WoWScrnShot_113013_174112

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Stretching a point perhaps, but that golden glow in his eyes is definitely a light of sorts and given that he was once a paladin, it just seemed appropriate.

Day 5

WoWScrnShot_120113_194755

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas

Personally this poem is one which always strikes a cord with me. My Mother’s eldest Brother died around 16 years ago and his descent into darkness was not an easy one. By the time he took his last breath, the disease had taken everything from him, his memories, his voice, his sight.. leaving nothing but agonizing pain barely dampened by medicines and prayers. As I was reading English Literature at the time, my Grandmother asked me to read this at the memorial service and now whenever I reread it, the years fall away and I’m back standing by a gaping void in the earth, wet with rain and tears, attempting to project my emotions into the words and not my voice.

Day 6

WoWScrnShot_112013_215751
The Temple was cool and dark, the only noise that of rippling water and yet every so often, sunbeams would dart in through painted glass, flickering across the stones and dancing across the pools, bringing life to the cloistered halls.

Day 7

WoWScrnShot_111113_195523
Light breaks where no sun shines;
Where no sea runs, the waters of the heart
Push in their tides;
And, broken ghosts with glowworms in their heads,
The things of light
File through the flesh where no flesh decks the bones.

Dylan Thomas

My love affair with Dylan Thomas started many moons ago when as a 13 year old, I discovered a battered copy of Under Milk Wood lurking underneath a bunch of magazines on a Charity Shop shelf. A few minutes and 10p later it was mine along with several dubious horror stories and an interesting romance. Curled up on the sofa, two or three pages in, I was hooked. Even now, whenever my Grandmama or Mother are bemoaning someone’s behaviour, a naughty little voice pops up in my head whispering “

Oh, what'll the neighbours say, what'll the neighbours...

If you haven’t read Under Milk Wood, I’d definitely recommend it and now, I’m off to see if I can make a character called Gossamer:

In Butcher Beynon's, Gossamer Beynon, daughter, schoolteacher,
dreaming deep, daintily ferrets under a fluttering hummock
of chicken's feathers in a slaughterhouse that has chintz
curtains and a three-pieced suite, and finds, with no surprise,
a small rough ready man with a bushy tail winking in a paper
carrier.

Day 3

WoWScrnShot_101813_193451
Never had there been a more welcoming sight than that of the flickering flame twisting and turning in the hearth. To escape inside from the icy winter chill which froze your very marrow and warm your numb limbs by the fire. Sipping spiced cider and watching the snowflakes fall beyond the window, salting the pumpkin patch with speckles of white… now that’s home means.

Day 4

WoWScrnShot_070912_020217

And in the land they guard so well
Is there no silent watch to keep?
An age is dying and the bell
Rings midnight on a vaster deep.
But over all its waves, once more
The searchlights move, from shore to shore.

(The Searchlights by Alfred Noyes)

On the subject of light at the end of the tunnel, remember there is only 4 and a bit days left to enter my competition and win something from the pet store (and yes pretty shiny colour changing mounts and puppies would be an option).

Therefore my challenge to you is this:

Pick one of the following

1. Store purchased pet

2. Pet available in game through pet battling

3. A creature which exists in game but isn’t yet a mini pet

and describe how you would make it available if you were a game designer. It could be through questing, through a random drop or from something else entirely. Your submission could be screenshot based, purely text or in iambic pentameter if that’s what floats your boat.

The winner (selected by Mr Harpy for impartiality and who knows what his criteria will be, although I will be overseeing) will receive a pet of their choice from the Blizzard store.

If you don’t have a blog you can still email me your submissions and I’ll post them here. My email address is on the right hand side bar (don’t forget to remove the spaces). If you have a blog, post them there just either link them here or email me to make sure I’ve noticed.

The last date for submissions is Sunday the 8th of December and as long as it’s that Sunday somewhere in the world when you email or post it, your entry will be considered.

Any questions feel free to ask, I mostly don’t bite.

Solstice Challenge: Moonlight

I left work early today, tired out by petty squabbles and general whines and whilst sipping my hazelnut latte, I discovered Matty’s Solstice Challenge.

Twenty-One Days, starting today, December 1, of things in Azeroth of Light Screenshots, from now until December 21. This works for both sides of the equator, seeing how we’re getting darker days in the North, the South is getting lighter. The only hitch I will add is you have to add a caption or haiku to your screenshot.

Day 1

WoWScrnShot_080411_214135

Staring at the statue, for a brief moment the Priestess was back to being barely more than a child seated in the old Temple Gardens. “The shrouds of Shadows are velvet soft to the touch, warm and fill the caster’s mind with whispers of false comfort”, their instructor had intoned, “On the other hand, the Light makes no promises, takes no prisoners. Wield her with honesty in your heart or she will burn the darkness from your soul”.

Yep, Erinys in her real Night Elf incarnation is coming back!

Day 2

WoWScrnShot_101913_214015

Even ghostly witches love the moonlight and when the harvest moon rises full and fat, look to the skies.
